Salekhard (up to 1935 - Obdorsk) is the capital of the world's largest gas producing region - Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District. The only city in the world, which is located  at the latitude of the Arctic Circle.

The city is situated on the border of the subarctic and temperate climatic zones. The Arctic Climate determines Salekhard: The sun shines 1,500 hours per year, the duration of snow cover is approximately  210 days, 292 days of heating season. January isotherms are 25 degrees, 15 degrees are  in July. Annual precipitation ranges from 450 to 500 mm.

The total area of ​​the municipality is 846 sq. m. miles.

The resident population of the municipality is about  43,500 people.


History of Obdorsk - Salekhard goes into the history of the development of the north of Western Siberia, creating a state of aboriginal people, resettlement industrial North.

Obdorsk centuries was an outpost of the Russian state on its way to the northern Pacific Ocean. After the annexation of Siberia to Russia, on the place of Ostyak town, near the junction of Ob and Polui rivers, Obdorsk jail was founded by Russian Cossacks Berezovsky's governor Nikita Trakhaniotov  in 1595.

Obdorsk experienced many changes, always being the center of the region and an independent administrative unit. There were representatives of the royal administration. The jail was renamed in 1635.

In 1799 the fortress was abolished. Outpost was transformed into a center of Obdorsk volost of Berezovsky district of  Tobolsk province – village Obdorsk.

In 1897 there were 30 houses, 150 retail shops in Obdorsk , there were 500 permanent inhabitants, mostly engaged in hunting, fishing and trade. Every year from December the 15th till January the 25th was held, with a turnover exceeding 100 thousand rubles. It attracted thousands of buyers and sellers. Merchants brought here the flour and bread, products from metals and jewelery, cloth, wine and tobacco, and took away furs, walrus tusks, fish and bird feather.

After the formation of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District, Obdorsk became its capital and in 1933 received a new name - Salekhard (from the Nenets "Harn-Sale" - town on the Cape). In 1938, the district gained the status of the city center. Now it is a modern administrative, cultural and business center in the region. The city is provided by modern communication and telecommunication.

More recently, Salekhard became a big construction site. The housing shortage was one of the most pressing social problems of the city. Therefore, the priority was the construction of houses and social facilities.


Salekhard Fish Canning Plant Yamal from ancient time was famous for its fish stocks.

Fish factory in the village of Obdorsk was the same age of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug and was built in late 1930. The first products of Obdorsk canning factory came to consumers in July 1931. In 1933 Novoportovskoye floating cannery, other small fish processing plants were opened in the county.

Soon, these companies produced about 4 million cans per year. Among the first foremost fishing industry was the foreman Koptyakov of Yamal Puykovsky fish factory, salekhard can worker Rusakov and Shakhmatova, fishermen of Kharyuchi Java brigade from the kolkhoz "Nyaryana Heyer," which caught every five tons of “alive silver” per  year of living. Already at the beginning,  cans had a northern export value, and the first deliveries of the hundreds of thousands of cans. In the domestic market cans are quoted as one of the best. In 1939, fish cannery factory participated in the World Exhibition of fish production in New York.

A ceremonial start up of a new fish processing plant was on  the 8th of December.

 The new company, which is of a very convenient location - right by the river, allowing the dock fishing vessels come till the frosts, was erected a little more than a year: the start of construction - July 2004.

The range of products is the variety of canned food (up to 3 million cans per year), the famous northern fish - dried, salted and smoked, and the second fish dishes are  in the freezer. Experts note that in addition to new technologies in production will be used vintage recipes for fish.

The company produces more than 70 kinds of products, which is known far beyond the Yamal. The fish has eight production cycles before presence on the table of the people.


The city is connected by river crossing through Ob (in summer) and ice road (in winter) with the railway station Labytnangi.

 By 2012, there is a plan to build a bridge across the Ob between Salekhard and Labytnangi.

In 1949-1953. Salekhard was one of the basic points of construction transpolar highway (mostly inactive railway branch to Novy Urengoy, which passes also through the Nadym).

The town also has a river port (passenger transport with the Khanty-Mansiysk, Omsk and towns on the banks of the Ob Bay) and the airport.

The construction of the road Salekhard - Nadym, and its head portion Salekhard - Aksarka already has built. Within the project "Ural Industrial - Ural Polar" there is the plan to build railways Salekhard - Nadym and Midnight - Ob - Salekhard.
