Kurgan region is the subject of the Russian Federation.
The administrative center of the area is Kurgan.
The region was formed on the 6th of February in 1943.
Population - 992 100 (2010), of which 56.5% - urban population, population density - 14.0 people per 1 km ².
There are 24 rural districts, 9 cities, 6 towns and 1230 villages at the present time in the Southern Urals.
It shares borders with such regions like Sverdlovsk and Chelyabinsk, Tyumen and the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Kurgan settlement, which arose on the outskirts of the Russian state border, quickly turned into a military fortress, guarded by nomads Russian lands and settlements.
To the middle of the XVIII century, it had a triple line of fortifications and numbered about one thousand servicemen with 28 guns. The garrison of the fortress was the largest throughout the Tobol.
With the development of lands further to the south and east, the building of new fortresses of Presnovsky border line, Kurgan suburb lost its defensive significance and began to develop an administrative and trade center of a fertile land.
There is a good combination of fat black soil for farming with rich forests for construction here.
That is why, despite all the attacks and distraction by the nomads, people came back here and rebuilt.
Kurgan region is the youngest region in Siberia. During the development of the field, the economy worked for war needs. 15 companies from the European part of the country were evacuated.
Industrial production increased significantly during the war, including the engineering and metalworking.
A great contribution to the defeat of Nazi Germany is made by agricultural workers.
During 60 years of its existence, the Kurgan region was able to become an important economic unit of the state, to show the potential of agriculture and industry, to identify diligence and the talents of the people.
Geographical location, natural resources, climate
Kurgan region's unique geographical location is in Eurasia. This cross-border territory of Russia is beyond the Urals. Therefore, this region is called Trans-Urals. The region is situated at the junction of the Urals and Siberia in the basins of the rivers Tobol and Iset.
The relief of the Kurgan region is flat with slight slope to the north-east. The area is abounded with hollows, which give the unique look of the edge. These lowlanders, or so-called saucers, are mostly occupied by water, forming a marvelous beauty of the lake.
Shield of the Ural Mountains is from the west, the direct proximity with the vast steppe areas is in the south, as well as relief and the features of air masses circulation determine the nature of the continental climate.
The area is rich in natural resources, forest yield and magnificent nature with its recreational opportunities. The main natural resource is fertile land.
Kurgan Region is rich in various minerals. The main mineral resources of the area consist of peat, mud treatments, fresh and mineral underground waters.
The area is characterized by all kinds of vegetation, typical of the forest-steppe zone of Western Siberia.
The forests are abounding in berries and mushrooms, lots of rose hips, wild cherries, currants, strawberries, and stone bramble, cherry. There is a diverse fauna of the area. You can see the significant populations of moose, deer, wild boar, common wolf, badger, fox, hare, and muskrat in many lakes. Among the birds are ducks, geese, partridge, and grouse.
On the basis of evacuees during the Second World War, companies from the western regions of the country began forming local industry. Then the factory of woodworking machines, road machines, Wheel Tractor Plant, the phone works, and others appeared.
Fields of construction material, discovered deposits of iron ore and uranium are widespread in this area.

The main natural resource of the field is the fertile land. Agricultural lands occupy more than 39% of the area. Forests cover about one fifth of the region.
Electrified Trans-Siberian railway, main oil and gas pipelines pass through the territory. It is bordered with highly developed regions of the Urals, Sverdlovsk and Chelyabinsk, as well as the Tyumen region and Kazakhstan.
