Nalchik is a  city in Russia, the capital of Kabardino-Balkaria, the "city that is set in a horseshoe of mountains."

 The city is the resort of federal significance. It was founded in 1724. The status of the city was given in 1921.

The population is 269.0 million people (2010), total area is 150 km ². The green area is  991 hectares.


Until recently, the official date of Nalchik fortress foundation was considered 1818, although some of the pre-revolutionary historians wrote about the fact that it was built in 1822, the first military settlers in Nalchik on January 4, 1839 were the lower ranks Kabardian Jaeger Regiment, as well as those " who themselves were willing to enter into this class”. They were natives from different provinces - Penza, Tambov, Voronezh, Saratov and Poltava, troops of the Don region, etc.

In 1862 a military settlement of Nalchik has been transformed into a village. Nalchik suburb divided into several parts on the national and social grounds.

In a separate settlement, although considered part of the settlement, mountain Jews lived. Next to Nalchik was Alexander's German Colony. The Russian population of Nalchik was divided into two groups: "natives" and "nonresident."

In 1884 in Nalchik, there were 2 boulevards, 16 streets, 22 lane and a market square.

Resolution of the Government of the Russian Federation on October 31, 1999 № 1203 approved the city of Nalchik as the resort of federal value refers to the protected area.

On March 25, 2010 by the Decree of the President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev Nalchik was awarded the title of the Russian Federation "City of Military Glory."

At the beginning of the XXI century, the city of Nalchik is one of the gems of the golden ring of the Caucasus resorts in the southern Russia.

Geographical position

The city is situated on the river Nalchik (the basin of the Terek), in a picturesque area at the foot of the Main Caucasian Range at an altitude of 400 to 600 (center - 500) m above sea level.


Nalchik is a major industrial center. The city has plants: engineering, electronics, metalworking, food-processing industry developed.


The basis of urban public transport in Nalchik are buses and taxis (route numbers and routes themselves are almost identical). Well-developed is taxi service, provided by a large number of carriers and the set of points - the taxis.

In Nalchik airport  of local importance was built, there is railway station (a dead-end branch, the main railway junction of Kabardino-Balkaria - City of Prokhladny). 

In the city there is the station and the railway connecting Nalchik to Prokhladny.

Federal highway  Rostov-na-Donu-Baku passes through  the town.
