Description

Krasnodar  is a city in  the south of Russia, the administrative center of Krasnodarsky Area. (up to 1920 Ekaterinodar)  is the largest industrial, transport, trade, scientific and cultural center of southern Russia.

The city is located on the Kuban-Azov (Kuban) Plain, on the right bank of the Kuban River, a distance of 120-150 km from the Black and Azov Seas.

The population is about 720 thousand people. (2010).

Krasnodar is divided into four districts -  West, Karasunsky, Prikubansky and Central.

Within the district there are 2 towns and 5 rural districts and 29 villages.

History

Within the current city limits, on the banks of the Kuban the ancient city of Bosporus  the fortifications  of Elizabeth were  located. Nearby there was the castle of King Arifarna who took part in the struggle for the throne Bosporan. The main residents were allegedly Meotians, Scythians and Sarmatians.

At first it was just a military camp. It was constantly fortified and turned into a fortress. Inside the fortress built by the old Cossacks of Zaporizhia sample forty incense, walled shaft and ditches. Sami kureny arranged around a wooden cathedral of Holy Trinity Church.

A year after the construction of a fortress around her began to form the city became the administrative center of the Black Russian Cossacks, and later - the main city of the Kuban Cossacks.

On January 1, 1888 lived in Ekaterinodar 43.5 thousand people. The city had 8 churches and a cathedral, seven hotels, three restaurants, 110 restaurants and pubs, shops and 250 retail shops and 80 factories, four cooperatives, three printers and a tobacco factory.

Since the beginning of the XIX century in Ekaterinodar annually held four fairs. There was exchange-yard, where their goods come from the Highlanders, and in 1842 opened the Black Sea Trading Company Cossack troops. Trade contributed to the opening of the steamer traffic on the Kuban.

In the 1870-1880's, holding in the North Caucasus Railway Tikhoretsk-Ekaterinodar-Novorossiysk, a city into a major commercial and industrial and transport center of the Kuban region.

The development of heavy industry began in Ekaterinodar in the early XX century. In 1911 was built metalworking plant "Kubanol." In 1915 were built ironworks, and others who worked on the Donetsk metal and coal. On the basis of the Maikop oil refinery was established.

In the pre-thirties, significantly changed the cultural life of Krasnodar  there appeared marginal Drama Theatre, Maxim Gorky and the Opera Theatre.

On August 12, 1942 to February 12, 1943 Krasnodar was occupied by Nazi troops, who inflicted great damage to the city. After the war it was rebuilt and renovated, but the layout of streets in the city center is preserved in the form in which it has been since the beginning of the XIX century.

Geographical position

The city is located in the Kuban-Azov (Kuban) Plain at altitudes of 30—40 m above sea level on the right bank of the Kuban River in 1 350 km from Moscow, on the border of Adygea.

Industry

The main directions are instrument, metal, construction materials, garments and knitwear, furniture, tobacco, food and agricultural products.

Transportation

Through the city of Krasnodar are held highways of federal importance, 5-way of railroads. To the east of the city there is an international airport, to the south - a river port.

To Krasnodar is assigned the function of the main logistics operator on the endpoint part of international transport corridors, especially the transport branch of the state border with Finland and more - St. Petersburg - Moscow - Rostov-on-Don - Krasnodar - Novorossiysk, with a branch in Astrakhan and exit to the south gate Russia - Novorossiysk, Tuapse, Temryuk, Eisk, Sochi.
