Ivanovo is a city in central Russia, administrative center of Ivanovskaya oblast.  It is a city of textile industry, the city of craftswomen, handy women and "brides"..

The city was founded in 1871.

The population is: 403 000 people. (2010), the area is  104.84 km².


The first mention of the village of Ivanovo refers to 1561. In 1741, farmer Gregory Butrimov built the first in Ivanovo manufacture, and then there were manufactories of Grachev and Garelin. This ushered the development of light industry in Ivanovo : first linen, and then the printed cotton and cotton. In 1848, there  started working a cotton mill.

In 1853, near Ivanovo arises Voznesensky Posad, which was merged with the village Ivanovin 1871,  in the town of Ivanovo-Voznesensk- Shuisky district, Vladimir province.

In 1905, in Ivanovo-Voznesensk occurred a strike, during which the Board of Commissioners  created  the first Russian Council of Workers' Deputies, led by M. Frunze. Since April 1918, Ivanovo-Voznesensk was the center of Ivanovo-Voznesensky province (and later the area). Title of the city Ivanovo received in 1932. In Ivanovos began the way of the legendary squadron (then — Aviation Regiment) the "Normandy-Neman". By agreement between the USSR and patriotic organization "Fighting France" at the end of 1942 to the Soviet Union came a group of French pilots. Basis for forming a new part was the airfield on the northern outskirts of the city.

Since the early 1990's, from time to time, the question is raised about the possibility of returning the original name of Ivanovo-Voznesensk.

Geographical position

The city is located between two rivers the Volga and Klyazma, on the banks of the River Gone (tributary of the river. Klyazma), 318 km north-east of Moscow.


Ivanovo is he center of the textile industry. Since the mid 20 th century in the industry began to develop engineering, chemical industry, building materials production.


In the northern part of city of Ivanovo there is a station of the Northern Railway, located on the line Moscow - Kineshma.

From Ivanovo to Moscow there are two trains Ivanovo - Moscow.

Also pass through the station the trains Kineshma - Moscow, Yaroslavl — Nizhny Novgorod and Samara — St Petersburg, Ufa, Russia — St. Petersburg summer and train Ivanovo - Anapa.

The bus station is on the opposite of the railway station end of town. With its help is organized regular bus service to various cities, mostly to Central Russia.

Public transport is represented by: trolleys, buses and taxis.

  • Northern (military airfield — military transport aircraft and AWACS).
  • Yasyuniha, sports airfield ROSTO.
